When someone searches "dentist near me" or "best cafe in Amritsar", local SEO decides who shows up. Follow this step-by-step guide to get your business into those results.
For most small businesses, the most valuable searches aren't national. They're local: "AC repair near me", "CA in Amritsar", "hotel in Dharamshala with mountain view". The people searching usually want to buy today. Local SEO is the process of making sure your business appears in those results, both in the Google Maps "local pack" and in the regular listings below it.
How Google ranks local businesses
Google says local results are based mainly on three factors:
- Relevance: how well your listing and website match what was searched.
- Distance: how close you are to the searcher or the location in the query.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is (reviews, links, mentions, overall SEO).
You can't move your shop closer to every customer, but you can strongly influence relevance and prominence.
Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important local SEO asset. Verify it, choose the most accurate primary category, add every relevant secondary category, and fill in hours, services, products, attributes and a keyword-rich but natural description. We cover this in depth in our Google Business Profile optimisation guide.
Step 2: Keep your NAP consistent everywhere
NAP means Name, Address, Phone. It should be written identically on your website, Google profile, Facebook, Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha and every other directory. Inconsistent details confuse Google and customers.
Step 3: Build location pages on your website
If you serve several cities, create a genuinely useful page for each: "Website Design in Amritsar", "Website Design in Dharamshala". Include local projects, local testimonials, a map and directions. Don't copy and paste the same text with the city name swapped. Google sees through that.
Step 4: Get more (and better) reviews
- Ask every happy customer, ideally right after the job is done.
- Make it easy: send your direct review link on WhatsApp.
- Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and professionally.
- Never buy fake reviews. It violates Google's policies and can get your listing suspended.
Step 5: Do on-page SEO for local intent
Put your city and main service in title tags, H1s and meta descriptions where it reads naturally. Add LocalBusiness schema markup with your address, opening hours and geo-coordinates. Embed a Google Map on your contact page. Our on-page SEO checklist walks through every element.
Step 6: Earn local citations and links
Get listed in reputable Indian business directories, local chambers of commerce and industry associations. Sponsor a local event, partner with complementary businesses, or get featured in local news. Links from local sources are strong signals of prominence.
Step 7: Post local content regularly
Publish Google Business posts every week: offers, new work, events. Write blog content that answers local questions, like "Best time to visit Dharamshala" for a hotel, or "Monsoon AC maintenance tips" for a service business.
Step 8: Track what matters
Watch Google Business Profile insights (calls, direction requests, website clicks), Search Console queries containing your city, and, most importantly, actual enquiries. Rankings are a means; leads are the goal.
