WordPress powers a huge share of the web, but it is not the right answer for every project. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose between WordPress and a custom Laravel build.
One of the first decisions in any website project is the platform. For most businesses it comes down to two options: WordPress, the world's most popular content management system, or a custom application built with a framework like Laravel. Both are excellent. They just solve different problems.
Quick comparison
| WordPress | Custom Laravel | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Content sites, blogs, brochure sites, simple stores | Custom workflows, portals, SaaS, complex business logic |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher |
| Time to launch | Days to weeks | Weeks to months |
| Flexibility | High within plugin limits | Unlimited, built to your exact process |
| Performance | Good if optimised, heavy with many plugins | Excellent, only the code you need |
| Security | Depends on updates and plugin quality | Strong, with a smaller attack surface |
| Content editing | Excellent, familiar editor | Whatever admin panel is built for you |
When WordPress is the right choice
- Your website is mainly content: pages, services, a blog, a portfolio.
- You want to edit text and images yourself without technical help.
- You need to launch quickly on a modest budget.
- Your requirements can be met by well-maintained plugins (forms, SEO, simple WooCommerce store).
The catch: every plugin is extra code to update and secure. A WordPress site needs regular maintenance, or it becomes slow and vulnerable.
When a custom Laravel build makes sense
- Your business has unique processes, like bookings with complex rules, multi-vendor marketplaces, dealer portals or quotation systems.
- You need integrations with payment gateways, SMS and WhatsApp APIs, accounting software or ERPs.
- You expect high traffic or large amounts of data.
- You are building a product (a SaaS or app back-end) rather than a website.
Laravel is a mature PHP framework with built-in authentication, queues, scheduling and a strong security record. It is why we wrote about why Laravel is still a great choice for business apps.
Cost over three years, not just day one
WordPress is cheaper to launch. But if you end up stacking ten paid plugins and fighting their limits, a custom build can work out cheaper over three years. Think about where your business will be, not just where it is today.
The hybrid approach
Many businesses use both: WordPress for the marketing site and blog, and a Laravel application for the customer portal or booking engine on a sub-domain. You get easy content editing and custom functionality.
